Abstract

The author discusses the problem of female circumcision as it stands in the traditional societies of the North Caucasus. The article is drawn on the outcome of sociological research conducted in Dagestan. The assumption that is put to test is that the practice of female circumcision in Dagestan has been persistent because of the closeness of the society and its traditions, as well as because of the growing influence of religion therein.
