Abstract

Two main trends characterized the material culture of the Tatar in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries: preservation of folk traditions and adaptation of European innovations. European lifestyle was mainly adopted by the urban upper classes: the entrepreneurs, government officials, and intellectuals. House interior designs changed drastically. The transition from the traditional to European understanding of the living space was caused by economic as well as mental factors. The article employs archival sources to explore the modernization of Tatars’ urban housing and different stages of that modernization.
