Abstract

The article discusses the Harbin ethnographical school, the forming of the first public scientific organizations, as well as the scholars’ careers and work. The author points to the part that public scientific societies founded by Russians in China played in the ethnographic studies of China’s north and the shaping of the younger generation of Russian ethnographers.
