The article contributes to the reconstruction of the picture of funeral meals and practices of their offering in various parts of Italy. The analysis draws on both historical data and author’s own fieldwork in Sicily and Sardinia. The author provides a detailed description of funeral meal varieties in Italian regions and examines the connection between the Italian mourning tradition and the ancient Roman funeral practices.
