Abstract

The article presents an architectural and ethnographic examination of a Pomor village situated on the White Sea coast (Vorzogory village of the Onega District, Arkhangelsk Region), including its history, settlement and development types, and the housing and utility complex. In the course of the study, we conducted architectural measurements of the residential, maintenance, and utility buildings and structures; ethnographic interviews; and verification of archival data available at the State Archive of the Arkhangelsk Region and the Arkhangelsk Regional Lore Museum. The findings showed that the Vorzogory village had retained the “nested” settlement type, “ribbon” and “radial” development type, and the residential architecture of the 19–20th centuries which is characterized by the joined house and farm-yard with a method of connecting the residential and household part of the “brus” on a high base, “four-wall” hut type with 3–6 windows on the main facade. The confirmed historical and cul- tural value of the village allows us to recommend declaring it an object of cultural heritage, and the landmark of the regional or municipal level of protection.
