Abstract
The article undertakes a complex study of origins, functioning, and distinctive features of the Old- Believers icon in the Ust-Tsilma region of the Komi Republic. The account is drawn on the outcome of research conducted in private estates of the region, at the A.V. Zhuravsky Historical Memorial Museum in Ust-Tsilma, the Pizhma Historical Ethnographic Museum, prayer houses in Ust-Tsilma and Zamezhnaia, as well as the chapel and pledge house in the village of Skitskaya. The goal of the article is to describe the most important features of icon painting and copper casting in the region, and explore in detail the verbal and ritual texts of the Old-Believers culture that are related to the use of icons in various everyday and ritual practices.
