Abstract
The article presents the results of historical-anthropological research on the discourse of English identity in its national, regional, and local representations with a focus on the identity of English northerners. The goal of the article is to understand how the sport and the fan culture ritualize community and represent the identity, what the quality and essence of the affective community is, and how it all relates to the issues of locality, race, and nationality. The study is drawn on the author’s field research conducted in 2010–2016 as well as on other textual and visual sources.
