Abstract
The introductory article to the special section of the issue on the “Anthropology of Football” introduces the theme and the range of issues discussed in the contributions that follow. The grand sport has turned into a major phenomenon on the planet in the twentieth century. Many of the issues examined by anthropologists in various domains of the cultural and social life of peoples, communities, and countries do manifest themselves in the domain of sport as well. Arguably, football/soccer is the Sport Number One and it deserves a closer examination.
