Abstract
The article examines the changes in ethnic composition of the Belgorod region as reflected in ethnographic maps from the late 19th through the early 21st century. Drawing on archival and others sources, the author describes the ways in which ethnic groups, such as Russians and Ukrainians, were settled and dispersed in the region. He analyzes the specificities of relations between the groups duringvarious periods, and enquires into the causes of the substantial drop in the number of Ukrainianpopulation in the region during the 1930s, as well as into the issue of its assimilation. The article is followed by comments by T. A. Listova.
