Abstract
The article discusses ethnic and cultural interactions between the Russians and Bashkirs, as well as other peoples. The author argues that intercultural borrowings were conducive to the successful adaptation of migrants to new social, economic, natural, and geographic conditions of life. They became an asset for the shaping of civil national identity in Bashkortostan, at the same time allowing for the preservation of Russian traditions in the multiethnic environment. The research is drawn on the author’s own fieldwork, as well as on archival data and pertinent publications.
