Abstract

The article examines the development of fishing as one of the most important branches of economy among the larger part of Alaska’s native population. It discusses fishing tools and techniques, methods of processing and preservation of fish, as well as ways of cooking and eating fish. The research draws on a variety of sources such as sailors’ reports, journals of early seafarers, notes and memos of members of the Russian-American company, chronicles of circumnavigation voyages, etc. The author touches on the changes that the native fishing underwent after the arrival of Russians in Alaska and founding of settlements known as “Russian America”.
