Abstract

This article focuses on the study of memes among indigenous minorities, in particular the Chukchi, Nenets, and southern Selkups. Each of the three groups demonstrates unique styles of creating and transmitting memes. This article attempts to explore memes from the viewpoint of ethnicity, or more precisely, as a way of expressing ethnic content among indigenous minorities. Speaking about the instrumental functions of memes for indigenous peoples, it should be noted that there is a wide range of possibilities for their expression and perception of ethnic identity. In this context, it is possible to identify both positive aspects and pitfalls associated with the risk of stereotyping and devaluation by external observers, as well as bringing to the surface taboo topics and characteristics. It is possible that this is the reason for the viability and relevance of memes, since they represent something authentic that contributes to the understanding and further development of ethnic identity.
