Abstract

The article examines the key aspects in the origin of the ethnonym-socionym Rus’, drawing on the research findings and data available today. I argue against the novel etymology of the word proposed by G.V. Dzibel in his article “On the Origin of Ethnonym Rus’ and of the Rurikid Lineage: A Look at the Slavo-Finno-Scandinavian Frontier of the 9th-11th Centuries AD from the Point of View of Kinship Studies” which may not be accepted as sustainable on linguistic grounds as well as taking into account the historical context of the Early Viking age.
