Abstract

The anthropology of space is still limited to research on outer space conducted on Earth. Up until very recently, anthropologists tended to think of the exploration of space as a global endeavor involving the joint efforts of the humankind. The space race, however, eventually manifested its national aspect. The latest research, interestingly, seems to suggest that the outer space is being further parcellized and confined to particular localities on Earth. This article introduces a thematic section of the issue on the “Anthropology of Space: From the Global to the Local” which features scholarly contributions from A. Vetushinskii, D. Sivkov, E. Kuchinov, I. Chalakov and I. Popravko.
