On the Goals of Russian Ethnography

Abstract

This is a reprint of the seminal article on “The Goals of Russian Ethnography” by Dmitrii Anuchin (1843–1923), which appeared as the first publication in the opening issue of Etnograficheskoe Obozrenie in 1889. The republication of the article is meant to mark the 130th anniversary of the journal and prompt the readers to rethink the roads taken and not taken over the course of more than a centurylong history of the leading Russian academic edition in the field of anthropology. The text has been edited in line with the contemporary Russian grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
