Abstract
Drawing on the outcome of research that involved extensive expert and focus group interviews, as well as participant observation methods, we examine the ways in which Crimean Tatars residing in the Republic of Crimea define their own identity. We attempt to investigate its significance and cultural constituents, and discuss the symbols and images that people use in defining their identity. Special attention is paid to exploring the channels through which ethnic identity is shaped and reproduced, the actors involved in its reproduction, and the impact of contacts and relationships with “Ethnic Others” on the composition and character of own identity.
