Abstract
The article examines the views and opinions of Church authorities and priests from Zyrian parishes of the Vologda eparchy about the importance of the native language for Christian education, as well as the attitude of believers towards the homily conducted in the native language. The first attempts to make the language of the sermon more accessible for Komi peasants were undertaken in the earlier half of the 19th century. In the latter half of the century, as the author argues, the practice became systematic.
